Aboriginal Law
Our lawyers are experienced with litigation and transactional matters involving aboriginal law, and our practice focus is land use and land use management. This includes Aboriginal rights and title matters, matters before the federal Specific Claims Tribunal, and transactions and disputes involving reserve land subject to the Indian Act. For Indigenous Nations which have opted out of the land management provisions of the Indian Act, we are experienced with the Framework Agreement on First Nation Land Management Act, and land codes adopted under that legislation.
Our lawyers’ representative experience in this area includes acting as transaction counsel to tenants holding Crown leases granted pursuant to the Indian Act involving leases valued at tens of millions of dollars, and acting as litigation counsel for substantial and complex multi-party legislation involving a new and growing area of land use disputes under an Indigenous Nation’s Land Code. We are actively interested in fostering new relationships with Indigenous Nations, and owners/occupiers of reserve land seeking legal advice about their rights and responsibilities and welcome correspondence from potential clients.
